Rivers State Polytechnic Students Attack CSO, Loot, Burn ...After Police Beat, Arrest Colleague


Many people were injured yesterday after students of the Rivers State Polytechnic, Bori, went on rampage following the arrest and alleged death of their colleague on Wednesday.

According to reports, a student, identified as Effiong, was arrested at the venue of the an election being conducted by the local chapter of the National Association of Akwa Ibom State Students. 

Student Pulse gathered that Effiong was allegedly beaten by policemen who took him away.
Trouble started when a rumor reached the students that Effiong had died in police custody.
Students then gathered on Thursday morning, demanding to see their colleague.


Assurances offered by the institution's Chief Security Officer (CSO) did not convince the students who attacked him, almost beating him to death.

In the chaos that followed, some persons looted the Information Communication Technology (ICT) centre. It was reported that the offices of the Rector and the Bursar were set ablaze. Violence continued until the intervention of policemen from the the offices of the  Bori Area Command.

The state Commissioner of Police, Mr Dan Bature, said the arrested student has since been released.

“As soon as I received the information, I ordered that the students should be released," he  said.

"There is no report of death or casualty in the polytechnic".
Police have since restored calm even as the students have been asked to stay away from the institution's premises.

The CSO has been hospitalized.
