Tambuwal, Speaker of the House of Rep

The national leadership of the Peoples Democratic Party is pushing for the resignation of the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Mallam Aminu Tambuwal, who defected to the All Progressives Congress on Tuesday.

Tambuwal had during plenary told his colleagues that he heeded the calls of members of his constituency to dump the PDP.

He also claimed that certain developments in the Sokoto State chapter of the PDP suggested that he could no longer continue to be a PDP member.

Officials of the Lagos State Task Force on Environmental and Special Offences have impounded 30 motorcycles in the Iju-Ishaga area of the state.

The task force also dislodged traders selling their wares at the Computer Village, Ikeja in a bid to stop street trading. It arrested four of the traders.

The task force officials had on Monday swooped on commercial motorcycle riders plying the Iju-Ishaga Road, which is said to be a restricted route.

The officials chased the okada riders and impounded their motorcycles.

It was learnt that the okada riders abandoned their bikes and took to their heels to avoid being arrested and prosecuted.

The police on Wednesday rescued the Minister of Petroleum’s sister, Madam Osiya Agama, who was kidnapped by unknown gunmen in Port Harcourt, the Rivers State capital.

Diezani Alison-Madueke’s sister was abducted on her way back from an evening church service on October 21, 2014, at Leventis Bus-stop along Port Harcourt-Aba Road.

In the city of Lagos, deep inside the streets of Lekki is a house. Paint washed off, roof leaking, over grown shrubs; and every night by the east wing, a lone light from a candle lights up and music can be heard playing.

Rumor has it the house is haunted and inhabited by the ghost of the owner; a former DJ. Some say headless horsemen ride through the endless hallway at night, some say they are centaurs. Nobody really knows.

Kenyan publication Standard Digital said he was arrested at his Nairobi Crown Plaza hotel over the weekend. According to the website, when confronted by the hotel’s staff, things got heated, which led them to calling police. Somehow Victoria Kimani’s name was also in the mix.

“Visiting Nigerian singer Wizkid was arrested from his Nairobi Crown Plaza Hotel room on Saturday afternoon and quizzed by police only hours before his flight back to Lagos.

The arrest was in connection with allegations that he was caught smoking illegal substances. The incident happened at around 1pm just as the Caro singer was checking out of his hotel room where he has been staying for a week, since his last week’s concert.

Reports according to TMZ; Drake was celebrating his birthday at Club Stadium in Washington D.C. Saturday night carrying what looked like thousands of dollars.

The rapper was seen rushing angrily back into a DC nightclub, throwing bundles of dollars to the ground in the process.

Some people inside the club claimed they saw someone punch a member of Drake’s crew, which could have triggered his temper.

Nollywood actress, Ini Edo has cleared the air on her failed marriage to US-based businessman, Phillip Ehiagwina.

Speaking out via her Twitter handle, she said, “I asked for a divorce from my ex-husband because of lots of irreconcilable differences.

I never cheated on my husband. There is a conscious and malicious attempt at tarnishing my image. This whole saga is familiar, let’s not forget the past. Thanks and God bless.”

Students at Olabisi Onabanjo University in Ogun state are back in school now, and the campuses have come alive again. The students are relieved that the lockdown is over.

The students revolted this August to clamour for a tuition slash. At the time, a student in science was paying about N130,000 a year. Comparatively, a student in science at the neighbouring Oyo state university, LAUTECH, was paying half that amount. However, the state government withstood the revolt.

The government owns at least seven higher institutions, and this year it announced a flat tuition cut across all the schools effective next year. But while students in the other schools accepted this arrangement, students in OOU did not.

The ban on the movement of commercial motorcycles, popularly known as Okada, seems to have been relaxed by the Lagos State Government, going by the sheer number of motorcyclists on major highways.

In areas like Ikeja, Surulere, Ketu, and some parts of Lagos Island, commercial motorcycles can be often seen plying their trade with little or no restrictions, as opposed to what was obtainable, when they were practically run off the roads.

Observers have accused the Governor Babatunde Fashola administration of relaxing the law based on 2015 political considerations. Many commercial motorcyclists, who represent a large voting block, have threatened to withdraw their support for the All Progressives Congress (APC) party if the law is not repealed or at-least relaxed.

An American cameraman, Ashoka Mukpo (pictured above) working for US TV station, NBC News in Liberia, has tested positive for Ebola, making him the 5th American to have contracted the disease and the first journalist known to have contracted the virus in West Africa.

The 33-year-old cameraman and writer started showing symptoms of the disease on Wednesday Oct. 1st and immediately quarantined himself after suspecting he might have contracted the disease.

He then went to the Doctors Without Borders test center in Monrovia, Liberia where it was confirmed he had the disease. He is expected to be evacuated from Liberia to the United States immediately for treatment.

Nollywood actor, Desmond Elliot, is running for the Lagos state ‘House of Assembly’ at the 2015 elections under the auspice of the All Progressives Congress, APC.

The actor was recently in Surulere where he had a dialogue session with the people of Surulere Constituency 1.

The urban radio station celebrated their 5 years of existence, with a mega concert tagged ‘Triple 9 Concert’, on September 30, 2014, which took place at the Landmark Event Centre, Lagos.

Filled with pomp and fanfare, the concert was hosted by Olisa Adibua, with contributory host duties filled out by the On-Air Personalities from the radio station. Music was provided by 4 leading Nigerian disc jockeys. DJ Caise, DJ Spinall, DJ Neptunes, and DJ Jimmy Jatt.

There were thrilling performances from a number of top Nigerian acts, including Tiwa Savage, 2face Idibia, Burna Boy, M.I Abaga, Waje, Timi Dakolo, Ill Bliss, Omawumi, and many more. South African Jazz and urban band, Mi Casa, also had a performance.

Many people were injured yesterday after students of the Rivers State Polytechnic, Bori, went on rampage following the arrest and alleged death of their colleague on Wednesday.

According to reports, a student, identified as Effiong, was arrested at the venue of the an election being conducted by the local chapter of the National Association of Akwa Ibom State Students.

Student Pulse gathered that Effiong was allegedly beaten by policemen who took him away.
Trouble started when a rumor reached the students that Effiong had died in police custody.
Students then gathered on Thursday morning, demanding to see their colleague.

The late choreographer, who danced for popular musicians like Pasuma, KWAM 1 and Shina Peters, died during childbirth in a private hospital in Lagos on October 1, exactly 20 days after her wedding to husband, Godwin Eloanyi.

Godwin Eloanyi took her to a private hospital where she was in and out of labour for several days.

When it was certain that it wasn’t possible for her to have a natural childbirth, the doctors informed her that she’ll be undergoing a Cesarean Section but the operation would cost N450k.

“Kemi wouldn’t have died if the doctors did pay attention to her. She was in labour for several days and was asked to pay certain amount of money before she could be operated upon. The truth is that Kemi was in labour for over one week. She tried in vain to give birth the normal way but the baby just didn’t come.

Eventually the doctor told her she would have to go through C&S. It was termed emergency C&S. The hospital asked her to pay a sum of 450,000 for the operation. He also said that before anything could be done they would have to make a deposit of 300,000. He made several efforts to raise 300,000 but deposited all he had.

MTV has today unveiled hip hop superstar Nicki Minaj as the host of the 2014 MTV EMA. Just two weeks before she releases her highly anticipated third studio album The PinkPrint, Minaj will be hosting the world’s annual music awards show that celebrates the year’s hottest artists from around the globe.

Happy 54th Independence Anniversary to Nigeria and Nigerians.

For a brief moment, it is important that we cast the ever looming 2015 elections to one side. In the 21st century, democracy is not an end unto itself and no country can expect to make progress in an atmosphere of legal anarchy, and no power.

After all, China is not a Western style democracy, but has managed to implement a law system that works, plus, they have an abundance of power.

No one can deny the progress that Nigeria has made in the last four decades, but it is clear that a lot more still needs to be done as we have barely even scratched the surface.

Indeed, 54 hearty cheers are in order, but we need to get back to work.
